Corporate Headshots and Portraits

What’s the difference between a headshot and a portrait?

There’s no strict definition for either term, and they are often used interchangeably along with similar terms such as professional photos or business photos.

Broadly, a headshot is more about what someone looks like and is generally a tighter shot of the head and shoulders. It is often shot against a plain background and the subject is usually looking directly at the camera. On most social media platforms the photo is square or circular.

A portrait meanwhile might show more of a person, both literally and figuratively. Crucially, a portrait will often seek to communicate more than just what someone looks like and tell us more about who they are. The setting is often environmental, such as a place of work, and might tell us about their job or role.

Headshots are well suited to social media profiles, staff photos on client communications, internal comms, or staff directories. Portraits might be used to tell a more in depth story about specific individuals and are typically used in external communications such as annual reports, PR or marketing materials.

Once we know how the photos will be used we can discuss different options with you to deliver the images you need.

What should I wear?

This is one of the most common questions, and there’s no simple answer. We have an in depth look at this issue here.

Do you provide a hair and make-up service?

We are able to arrange a hair and make-up artist to be on site for the shoot, however please note that a full makeover takes 30-45 minutes per person at a minimum. Often a quick touch up service for both men and women is all that’s needed.

Even without a professional HMUA on the shoot, we know a few tricks to help people look great (think powder, blotting tissue, lint roller, hair spray, etc).

It’s a good idea to get your hair freshly cut/styled for the shoot, and apply make up as you normally would.

How long does it take?

How long’s a piece of string?! It primarily depends on how many poses, expressions and looks are needed for each person. When it’s just one simple look and time is of the essence we might take 1-2 minutes per person. On a “typical” shoot it’s around 3-5 minutes, and it goes up from there as the requirements become greater. Once we know what you need we will be able to advise on timings.

How many photos do I get?

As many as you need. We don’t set any limits.

What about retouching? Do you touch up the photos?

We make any minor tweaks to brightness, contrast, colour and then supply high resolution photos. These photos are ready to use, but we find that many of our clients like to choose their favourite images for retouching.

Our Headshot Retouching service covers things such as reducing any facial shine, removing blemishes, shaving rashes and flyaway hairs, brightening eyes and whitening teeth, removing bags under the eyes and softening wrinkles. We like to think of this as just making you look your very best, as if you’re relaxed and well rested from a day at the spa.

On request, we also offer other adjustments such as removing grey hairs, removing braces, taking a little weight off, etc.

I’m organising a shoot for my team/organisation. Can you help?

Whether you’re organising for a few or a few hundred people, we can help to make it all go smoothly. We’ve done this literally hundreds of times and know all the tricks. We’re happy to talk it all through and help you every step of the way. We have a guide here that’s a good place to start.

How much do you charge?

We have some information on pricing here. For a quote please get in touch via our contact form or call us on 0420 393 289.

Can you match our existing photos?

Please send through an example or a link and we’ll take a look. It’s not always possible to completely match existing photos, but we’ll certainly do our best to keep a consistent look to your corporate imagery and will chat through the options with you.

I saw something I like – can you do something similar?

Yes, it’s great that you know what you want and we’ll always do our best to emulate it. Send through a photo or link and we can discuss how best to deliver photos that will work for you.

Fitness Photography

I’m a PT needing photos for my business, can you help?

Absolutely! We’re happy to work with you to produce the images you need to promote your services. Whether your based in a gym or the local park, and whoever your target demographic is, we can create the photos you need to market your business.

I’ve never done a shoot before, I’m really nervous!

Don’t worry, we hear this all the time and understand that people can get anxious ahead of their shoot! Even professional models get nervous!

We’ll chat through everything before hand, so you’re comfortable with what we’ll be doing on the shoot. And on the day you’ll have so much fun you’ll soon forget all about it.

How should I prepare?

Most importantly, make sure you’re well rested and hydrated.

If you’re going for more action photos then keep hair and makeup simple. For more of a posed/glamour look then you can do a bit more with hair and makeup, but it’s still best to err on the side of simplicity.

If you’re getting a spray tan do a couple of test runs to work out exactly what works best for you – it does vary from person to person.

What should I wear?

Bring a few different outfits that have different cuts, styles and colours. Think about which parts of your body you want to show off and ensure that the clothing will work.

Do you have access to a gym?

We have relationships with a few gyms that have different styles and equipment and can arrange access. Some gyms charge a fee.
