What You Need to Prepare Before Your Business Portraits Session

Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or a successful businessman, a good business portrait goes a long way to impress your potential clients or build a professional brand. So here’s a comprehensive guide on how to prepare for a photoshoot for your business portrait!

Keeping Your Body In Shape

The first thing you need to do when taking business portraits is to take care of yourself. If this is your first time, you need to know that getting great results from a photo shoot is much easier if you have plenty of energy. So try to ensure that you arrive well rested and have had something to eat recently.

That means you have to get yourself ready the day before, and you can achieve that by eating well and drinking plenty of water and then topping it off with a good night’s sleep. You don’t want the result to have dark circles under your eyes, would you?

If you’re beauty-conscious, applying skincare products consistently can mean a whole world of difference for your photoshoot. Well moisturised skin looks so good that it takes little to no editing in post-production! We recommend sticking to a skincare routine for a few weeks before your photoshoot. Trust us, you’ll look fantastic in your photos!

Picking Out A Style

Clothes

The second thing you need to consider is to pick out a style that reflects your personality while keeping it suitable for your business. A formal approach is the way to go if you’re keen on keeping it professional. A suit or company uniform are the most common clothes to wear in a formal shoot, with men usually wearing ties and women sometimes like to wear a scarf.

However, if you prefer to keep it business casual, you can dress down slightly. Wear anything comfortable as long as you pick clothes that are appropriate in a business setting. It’s always recommended to ensure that your clothes are clean and pressed folded the day before. Watch out for creasing, especially on the commute to work. You may want to bring your outfit in a suit bag and changing at work. Hence, you’ll look crisp and presentable for the photos.

Haircut

A haircut is an iconic piece of yourself that showcases your style and personality. Sometimes, it’s essential to have a fresh, clean cut for a successful photo shoot. It’s usually best to have your hair cut in the days leading up to the shoot, and many people like to have a blowdry the day before or on the day itself. We can also arrange for a hair and makeup artist to be on site for final styling (but they won’t cut it on the day).

For men it’s generally best not to shave just before the shoot in case of any skin irritation or shaving rashes. Shaving a few hours before leaves time for any redness to die down. However, men who get a five-o’-clock shadow may want to shave later if their shoot is later in the day.  Men should also consider whether they need to trim eyebrows, nasal hair or ear hair!

For women thinking about body hair, top lips, etc the same broad guidelines apply!

Make-up

When choosing what style of make-up you want, we strongly recommend hiring a professional make-up artist. Whether you’re going for an all-natural look or a bit on the heavy side, good make-up makes your best features pop out, which helps bring out the best of you.

Similar to a haircut, we recommend testing a style with your make-up artist a few days before, so you know what you’ll want to get on the day of the photoshoot.

Communicating With Your Photographer

Lastly, having regular communication with your photographer is the key to a successful business portrait. Photographers are the windows that let your inner beauty shine through the lens. They’re the sculptor in charge of the overall quality of your business portrait, while you are the marble they will polish.

If you’re unsure or this is your first time, you can even ask your photographer for suggestions on how to pose, what to wear, or what colours are an excellent fit for your portrait. Simply preparing the above mentioned things will make a huge difference in improving your business portrait.

The last thing you need to do is to arrive on time for your shoot. As the old adage goes, “early is on time” and this is important for your photoshoot as it means you will have plenty of time to make any final adjustments and relax. There’s nothing worse than rushing on a hot day and arriving with a bit too much of a glow! Besides, everybody likes a punctual person!
